Midland IRA Staff Volunteers 194 Hours During “Midland Volunteer Week”

Midland IRA’s entire company donated a total of 194 hours volunteering during the week of July 23 through July 27 in an initiative called “Midland Serves”, where 49 employees throughout the company volunteered at local food banks for the company’s first annual volunteer week.
The Fort Myers, Florida Midland IRA office volunteered at the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida. 27 employees donated a total of 135 hours sorting frozen meat and fresh produce at their distribution center. During the week of volunteering, the staff at Midland packed 26,194 pounds of food, totaling 21,828 meals.
The Harry Chapin Food Bank was founded in 1983 with the mission to lead the community in the fight to end hunger. The food bank serves five counties in Southwest Florida which includes Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry and Glades counties. Donated food and other grocery products are rescued, inspected, transported and distributed to over 150 partnering agencies including church food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens and more providing food for about 28,000 individuals each week.
Midland IRA’s Chicago, Illinois office volunteered for the Greater Chicago Food Depository. 20 employees spent a total of 50 hours working at the mobile food pantry to serve food to the homeless, volunteering at a local church, and working in the distribution center to sort and pack donated food.
The Greater Chicago Food Depository was founded in 1979 to fight hunger across Cook County. The food bank is partnered with 700 agencies and programs including soup kitchens, shelters, pantries and responses for children, veterans, and seniors in need. 164,000 meals are distributed to the most needed places throughout Cook County every day.
The Midland Trust Company office in Sioux Falls, South Dakota volunteered during Midland Volunteer Week at Feeding South Dakota. All three staff members spent a day sorting food donations (canned food, drinks, cereals, proteins, fruits/vegetables, etc.) into different categories so that they could create meals for people in need. In just 3 hours of volunteering, and with only 3 people, the Midland Trust Company employees sorted more than 3,000 pounds of food.
Feeding South Dakota is a hunger relief organization that is fighting to eliminate hunger in the state of South Dakota. Each week, Feeding South Dakota provides temporary food assistance to roughly 21,000 hungry families and individuals throughout the state. They also have a BackPack Program that provides over 5,500 children with food every weekend.
